The 10 Best Things to Do in Rome in September
September is one of my favorite times of year to visit Rome. Here are ten of my favorite things to do in Rome in September.
Rome is the most magnificent city in the world!
In my humble opinion at least… and I know many others feel this way, too!
The historic monuments everywhere you look, the quaint, winding cobblestone streets, the colorful buildings and the way the magical light hits at a certain time of day like nowhere else in the world…
And SO many other things!
This city is spectacular no matter what time of year you choose to visit.
I’ll be back in bella Roma in just one week, and I can’t wait!!
September is one of my favorite times of year to visit.
The weather is beautiful… still warm enough to not need a jacket, and to sit outside for leisurely dinners and aperitivo.
It’s still high season, but not as crowded as the summer.
There is so much to see in Rome…
Here are ten of my favorite things to do in Rome in September ✨
1 Take longs walks early before the crowds are out and meander your way through the streets. Go where your intuition leads you. Strolling through the historic center will take you to the Trevi Fountain, the Pantheon, and the Spanish Steps. You’ll get great photo opportunities with less people around! Stop for a cappuccino and cornetto along the way at the the wonderful Sant’Eustachio caffe.
2 Visit Castel Sant’Angelo and then walk up to the lookout at Gianicolo Hill. This will give you a bit of a workout, too! The view from the top is spectacular!
3 Visit Galleria Borghese and the gardens. This is a lovely museum full of paintings, sculptures and antique art, right amidst my favorite park in Rome! Take time to enjoy the gallery, then wander through the gorgeous park which is above the Spanish Steps on one side, and Piazza Del Popolo on another. It offers lookouts with fantastic views, as well!
4 Visit the Monti area for shopping and wine. This is a quaint "hipster" sort of neighborhood near the Colosseum. It's a more local area of Rome that has great shops, restaurants and amazing atmosphere.
5 Go to the market at Campo dei Fiori. This is one of the most famous outdoor markets right in the historic center of Rome. It's a beautiful place to grab some fresh fruit, vegetables, flowers and to simply people watch! It's near Trastevere so perfect to combine with an outing there, too! The name literally translates to "field of flowers." It's full of life and a must visit! There are great little shops and restaurants in this area, too!
6 Venture to Appia Antica - Take a long walk or rent bicycles to explore this beautiful ancient path in Rome. It's known as the first main highway of the Roman world! Take some food with you to stop for a picnic along the way!
7 Aperitivo on the roof at sunset. There are many rooftop bars in Rome which have breathtaking views! The hotel BioRaphael near Piazza Navona is one of my favorites. It’s also a vegetarian restaurant and they give you delicious little appetizers along with your drink of choice during their aperitivo!
8 Have an Aperol Spritz in an outdoor caffe. Sometimes the simple things are the best! Enjoy a stroll through the cobblestone streets and alleyways, and you will find a place that calls to you! Aperitivo is a favorite time of day in Rome, so there are many options to choose from!
9 Walk down the river from Prati to Trastevere. I've written before about how much I love to walk in Rome. In fact, you can check out my favorite walk here. The Tiber river is stunning, with so many different views from the many angles you see as you walk. Take your time and be ready with your camera or iPhone! You will want to take photos the whole way!
10 Take a sketching and painting tour of Rome! I have a degree in Art, so this always appeals to me! Even if you’re not artistic, this is a beautiful and creative way to see more of Rome, and notice details of this incredible city that you may not have taken the time to before. In these tours, no experience is needed, and they supply all the tools! Sketching Rome Tours is a great one to try!
This list could go on and on since Rome is so absolutely incredible! Every time I visit I feel like there is always more I want to see and experience...which is why I want to live in la citta eterna!
Have you done any of these? Please share in the comments, or if you have any suggestions, too! I love to hear from my readers!
I will be adding to this list since each time I go I love to try something new!
